Golden Drop Caps

UAL

A completely hand drawn Drop Cap typeface inspired by William Morris’ patterns and Kelmscott Press combined with a modern sans serif to balance the past, present and future of typography. His idea was to reject fast, easy production and to bring back the craftsmanship of handmade type, which was my goal with this piece. I combined natural forms found where I grew up and where I live now, but chose not to use color to leave the option of creating actual movable type to be used in a press.

We’d recently learned about the Arts & Crafts movement and were challenged to create something inspired by the movement. I was particularly inspired by William Morris and decided to create a drop-cap typeface inspired by his ideaology.

In the spirit of the Arts & Crafts movement, I also learned bookbinding to create the final booklet displaying the letterforms in context.
