Earth Day

When we began concepting ideas for Earth day in February 2023, we knew we wanted to do something different with this project. Despite being Walmart’s social media team, we decided to stray away from featuring any product—after all, Earth day shouldn’t be about buying new things.

As an avid gardener, I pitched the idea of regrowing vegetables from scraps. It’s easy to do, only requires a vegetable and some water, and getting your hands a little dirty is one of the best ways to ground yourself and connect to Mother Nature.

I styled, directed, shot, and edited a TikTok, Instagram Reel, and an Idea Pin over the course of several weeks—planning far ahead to capture the process. The shoot came with several challenges. First, I had to keep the tripod locked in place for several weeks (I even bought a backup so I could keep working on other projects in the meantime). Second, I had to trust the process—literally. Because it was a timelapse, I couldn’t swap out the produce; the lighting, placement, and growth stage all had to remain seamless. And finally, for the concluding shots, I had to use fully grown produce as a stand-in. Ideally, I would have continued the timelapse to capture the seedling growth after being planted, but with Earth Day in April, we simply didn’t have the time.

While the focus was on the gardening process, I organically wove in subtle product nods—like the owned-brand Thyme & Table cutting board, Pioneer Woman gardening gloves, and Better Homes & Gardens gardening tools—to quietly reinforce our always-on message: Walmart has what you need. At the request of leadership, I also incorporated a trending home-compost bin.

This was already one of my favorite projects before it even went live, but seeing comments from people who found the information genuinely useful—and were inspired to connect with the Earth through gardening—made it even more special.
