Wearing vs. Styling: Game Day

In fall 2023, a new TikTok trend emerged titled ‘wearing vs. styling’ where style creators would start with a basic outfit and show viewers how to ‘style’ it (or plus it up by adding to the outfit with accessories). My leaders wanted me to bring something new to the trend instead of just recreating it, and it also happened to be the start of football season, so ‘game day’ outfits were an obvious way in.

Being Walmart, there were limitations to a ‘game day’ look—mainly that we couldn’t show a trademarked team logo or jersey. Since we had to start with a solid-color top, I had the idea to customize the top with a quick and easy craft (if you’ve looked at more of my content, you won’t be surprised by this). I had used iron-on letters to customize a top recently, and thought it’d be a perfect solution for the asset.

It was a lot of elements to include in one asset: the trend itself, the inclusion of accessories and makeup, the game day messaging, and the craft. When I was working through the shot list and later editing the footage, I wasn’t sure these would all come together in a cohesive way. Luckily, I was wrong and this was not only one of the highest performing organic TikToks, but it was so succesful it was turned into paid content. It currently has 2.2M views on TikTok.

I concepted, styled, directed, shot, and edited this asset. This was also the first time I myself was the main subject of a piece of content.
