DIY Doormat Series
One of my favorite projects to date, the DIY Doormat series began in spring 2023 when our owned-brand Mainstays blank doormats started selling out thanks to a rising TikTok trend. I jumped on the opportunity to create seasonal crafting content for Walmart’s social channels.
For the first doormat, I created, shot, and edited two options. One was a simple “howdy”, and the other was a customer-truth “please be a delivery”. While the strategy team ultimately chose to post the ladder, I decided to add the former here because I feel it’s more visually engaging. The spring doormat performed so well, we decided to continue it as a series with seasonal updates.
Despite the original’s succcess, we wanted to get to the craft faster for the Halloween doormat. I streamlined the pacing by removing the written materials list (products were linked in bio) and jumped into the craft faster. We intentionally embraced a messier painting style for a fuzzy, spooky vibe, and shot on dead grass to heighten the seasonal mood. This installment went viral, hitting 2.3M views, and became one of Walmart’s top-performing paid ads across all social platforms.
The holiday version brought another format tweak: I replaced the “materials needed” section with quick-cut product shots immediately followed by their result, keeping the energy high from start to finish.
With each version, I grew significantly as a content creator — refining shot composition, experimenting with seamless transitions, and improving overall editing flow. The stop-motion, transitions, and looping, inspired by TikTok trends, were the highlight of the execution.
